Candle Lighting

Who sanctifies us through His Word and commands us to kindle the Shabbat flame). The lady of the house usually lights the candles before sunset Friday night; this reflects the honor God bestows on women and homemakers. This traditional blessing can also be recited by a child and is probably the first blessing a juvenile or a new proselyte memorizes. It marks the beginning of a day set aside for bodily rest and spiritual renewal. The grapes signify the covenant God made with His people and brings to mind the fourth commandment, to observe the day of rest. Keeping Shabbat is central to a Jewish lifestyle.
